my 57 plate fiat bravo was into the main dealer I bought it from and the timing belt needs replacing, can anyone give me an idea of cost I should be able to get it done for at a smaller garage?

Ring around and ask. It's bread and butter work, so smaller garages should be keen to get the job.

Probably about £350. Parts on a fiat shouldn't be too expensive.
  • Consider getting the water pump done too

My mechanic would charge in the region of £100-120 plus the parts costs. Roughly £220-240 has been my experience, for belt, tensioner and water pump. Can't see a Fiat engine being particularly abnormal.

Good advice to use an independent garage. I had to have the Timing belt changed on my last car an the main dealer quoted £1200 - it's a huge job sir, gonna take hours to do especially on a mid engined car. Much sucking of teeth and wringing of hands and they wanted the car for at least four days.

I took it to my usual independent and his comments were that it would be awkward but not a major pain. The final cost including parts, labour and VAT was £340. I dropped the car off in the morning and got a call at 3pm to say it was ready.

  • Depends on whether it's a diesel or petrol. There can be a difference of up to £50 for the timing belt kits (which I would recommend you do with waterpump).

Get the parts yourself and take to an independent. You then know quality parts have been used. If its a petrol you can pick up a gates kit for around £45-£50, diesel, £90 approx. Waterpumps will be circa £40. Allow a couple of hours fitting at around £40.

A main dealer will make a huge mark upon the parts and labour will be around £80 for fiat per hour.
