As far as I was aware if you have legal cover you can use this for any legal matter (criminal or civil), and not just those related to insurance cover. Certainly this has been the case with home insurance, I'd imagine the same would apply to car insurance as well. I suppose it depends on the company.
This is not so with (most) add ons (around £20) with car insurance, and certainly not with the OP's insurer (swiftcover).
Their add on "legal assistance service" only covers the cost for recovering uninsured losses, nothing else!
