  • i have had many jobs since leaving school, although i did do a joinery apprenticeship of three years, however failed the final year and as a result got laid off. i would say that i enjoyed doing joinery more than any of my other employment. a couple of months back i reapplied to the company that laid me off and they said to reapply in june july when they take apprentices on, so that sounds promising, but i need to get work until then...

many thanks!! do you know where i could find information on local job agencies? and how do prospective employers know about your work history?

would you like me to hand you the perfect job on a plate too?

i think you need to really think about your attitude to work as this may be the route cause of your work problems.

You have access to the internet and so you can look this info up yourself.

edit Also when you apply for jobs don't you have to put previous jobs on and give references????? this is how they find out you keep quitting
  • A CV that shows you jumping from job to job will be an instant turn off for most employers. I'd probably reject you at application stage for that, to be blunt.

I second the suggestion about temping. Yes, the work can be tedious but you tend not to be in any job that long (which is acceptable for temping, just not for permenent contracts!) so you shouldn't 'suffer' too much if you're bored or unhappy at any given company.

Try searching for local recruitment agencies on yell.com. Select, Adecco and Brook Street are three big ones that seem to have branches almost everywhere.

you do sound kinda like you have very little knowledge of the employment world. employers would know about your history for two reasons - 1 - your CV 2 - your references.

i guess this means you havent done work like office work so you will probably struggle to get taken on by temp agencies for this kind of work (do you have any skills like Office or typing skills?). therefore, i suggest you sign up for agencies that supply ppl for factory work, or alternatively go work in McDs, Burger King or some kind of job like that. yes they're not so hot but everyone has to start somewhere and if you REALLY want to go back to joinery it will impress them much more if they can see you are reliable and have made an effort to get off your backside and earn some money, esp as the people you work for will be able to provide your with references.

apologies if i have made too many assumptions and they are totally incorrect!

Almost every high street seems to have recruitment agencies from what I have seen. There are lots of smaller, local ones as well as the big ones the poster above emntions. Why not just get yourself down town and have a look? Good luck with getting work.

If you've left several jobs after a few months that might be why you're having trouble getting interviews, because potential employers think you might do the same thing again.

I would recommend going to a temping agency, because at least there if you don't like an assignment it's only for a couple of weeks, and if you stay with the same agency for a while they'll be able to give you a good reference.

Secondly, contact your local Next Steps (https://www.nextstep.org.uk) who will be able to give you a free careers guidance interview, which will hoepfully help you identify what you didn't like about your previous jobs and careers that might be more suited to you.

Finally, you've got to jsut swallow your pride and stick with a job even if you don't like it, because you need to get good referees lined up and prove that you can stick with something.

Have you been through your cv and made sure you're presenting yourself well- are you highlighting the bits relevant for each job? I think 6 months is a realistic minimum. Also in future a job you hate is better than not being able to pay the bills while you look for another one as it is meant to be easier to get a new job when you already have one. If you are hand delivering cv make sure you are friendly and approachable and smart. Also think about what you've learnt from your experiences so far and what bits of which jobs you've enjoyed most and which bits you really, really hate so when you're looking for jobs you can see which would suit you better. Good Luck
