Not sure if this is the right board.
But to cut a short story shorter. Washing machine died. New one coming Friday. Was going to call Council collection but decided to advertise washing machine for scrap or repair for free. Had 30 replies in 2 days and now been offered £10.
Its got me curious. Whats in my washing machine of any scrap value. Its an Indesit 1100 Model W1B111

Great MSE post!!!
I've been researching dishwashers today and am being quoted £10-£20 to take the old one away. I look forward to learning more.0 -
If the motor still works it's a viable item to sell or repair something else with. If not it will contain some copper tho how much I'm not sure.
There will also be some steel in there too.0 -

The fault may well have been something very simple to fix, so someone will fix it up for a small sum and use it or sell it on. W/M's don't just 'die', everything is repairable. What was the fault? No free lunch, and no free laptop0

agreed with macman to an extent
it might not financially viable to repair
tells us the symptoms and someone will no doubt know the problem.
i fixed mine for £2 when it wouldnt empty and continued to fill with waterSealed pot challenger # 10

I replaced WM this summer, old one was well past sell by date, I stripped it down prior to taking to council tip, I was after stainless steel drum, which has drive belt pulley incorporated, pulley is now a base, basically drum points upwards, makes for a good outside firepit, lots of holes for air to get in, never rusts..........

As scrap, its worth about £7 at the moment. If you take out the motor and sell it seperately as scrap, you'll get about another £2 or £3.
The value is in the parts to go on another machine or to refurbish your machine and sell it as secondhand refiurbished, A lot of Domestic Appliance Engineers will do this.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0 -
If it's something simple like a pair of brushes needed, then for a tenner or so, plus a tenner for the machine, then buyer has a w/m in good working order. And if it turns out to be not economically repairable, then most of the investment is recovered just in the scrap value, or more in the parts. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Vision panel from door cleans up lovely and makes a nice salad bowl - serious! You never know how far-reaching something good, that you may do or say today, may affect the lives of others tomorrow0

chap round here pays 10-25 quid for non workers. for the parts alone or to fix and sell.
with used parts and "free labour" it makes a nice little earner.
