Carpet slipping off stairs

We had carpet fitted throughout our house 2 years ago. Now with 2 cats and a bit of a dislike of the hoover they are looking a bit worse for wear... but the problem actually has nothing to do with cats or hoover! Basically the carpet on one of the steps has come away from the inner corner where the tread and rise meet. Could cause a nasty accident as if you come down the stairs at a trot, as you come off that step, the carpet moves with your foot and I can see someone getting catapulted onto their bum...
My question is... how did the carpet fitter do the stairs in the first place? IE how is the carpet connected to the stairs in that corner? Is there a gripper rod across the width of the step? (in which case can it be fixed without pulling the whole lot up?) Or can I just get a staple gun and staple it back in place?!!
(If a carpet fitter reads this... another question! Our cats went through a phase of scratching up the edges of the carpet downstairs and so it has come off the gripper rods pretty much all the way round (problem exacerbated by getting 11mm underlay I think). It can be a pain when hoovering and doesn't look very nice. The cats now don't seem to do this anymore, so I am thinking about getting a fitter to just refit the carpet to the gripper rods all the way around downstairs (walkthrough living room and dining room). how much would you charge for this?)
Thanks!

The gripper on the stair may need replacing ( the grip nails may be flattened ) or it may just need chapped back in , is there gripper there at all ?. £20 or £30 would be a reasonable charge to stretch your carpets.0

Hi, thanks for your reply.
I had a feel of the carpet on the stairs yesterday and I really can't tell if there is gripper on the sides or the back of the tread. I did find that the stair isn't done with a continuous piece of carpet but rather about 3 or 4 steps to each piece. I couldn't feel any nail heads or staples at all but guess they could be buried deep.
I think I will get in touch with the fitter who fitted it (if I can remember his name...) or someone else and get them to sort out the stairs and also stretch the carpets back over the rods downstairs too. Don't suppose you are based near Walton on Thames!?!0 -
