Boiler Repair Question

Hi All

Had a Worcester 37CDI fitted in late 2009.

It started to leak and i've been told the secondary heat exchanger has gone so i called Worcester to envoke my guarantee to be told that it was only for 1 year for that part! Gutted!

Worcester quoted £315 inclusive for repair with 1 year warranty.

My man quoted £212 + VAT for part plus £100 labour or £250 inclusive to recondition, both with 1 year warranty and also inclusive of todays temporary repair to stop it leaking.

Any advice re:
-What to do!
-Can i source part cheaper?
-Can i get repair cheaper?
-Anything else you may feel appropriate please!

Just phoned British Gas and they said they can do:
1. One off repair which is £89 for up to 30 mins or £229 for repairs 30-120 mins, or
2. Repair and cover, £99 for repair and then £22/month for cover for minimum of 12 months.

But the part is covered for 12m anyway if it's fitted as new...

Yes but in my experience that means you pay out and then have to reclaim from the manufacturer, in this case i can just recall BG or my engineer and it is covered without paying any money upfront. I think?

No, any reputable RGI will guarantee their work and parts for 12m. With BG you are paying for a warranty on a part that should already be guaranteed.
I'd put in a written complaint to WB as well, because a heat exchanger is not fit for purpose if it fails within just over two years. If it's out of warranty, it's still subject to a claim under SOGA.

That is spooky, you must be a mind reader as I was just about to ask about the SOGA claim!

If anyone has any experience of this I would like to hear from them please, thanks.

Spoke to WB a no times since last post and their position is that the part is under a 5 year warranty, but only for scale damage!

They then said they need to put a £320 hold on my card pending their engineer attending and then if it is under warranty they will leave the new part and not charge, if not they will charge the card the £320.

even if it is covered and they supply the part they will not fit it or pay for it to be fitted, what kind of ........ warranty is that?

Is this usual? Seems a bit dodgy to me!

Am waiting to speak to manager so would appreciate any help, advice, opinions etc in the meantime

Just spoke to manager who confirmed they will not do anything until a £320 hold is put on my card/account pending the engineers assessment.

He also said that it may be our fault if we live in a hard water area and do not have a water softener, is this correct?

Remember that any claim under SOGA will have to be made against the installer, not WB (unless you bought it from them yourself).

Pay the engineer £100 to fit the part and put the 'correct' info in the report.

Are you seriously suggesting that OP asks the engineer to put his career on the line by defrauding his employer and probably breaking his contract of employment in the process for the sake of 200 notes?
