Do I have to use the closest intermediary for a DRO?

Options
I live in a fairly small town where the walls have ears so I'd rather arrange a DRO elsewhere, with an intermediary in another town. Can I do that? I know a DRO is officially a public matter, but if nobody I know hears about it they will never look it up.

    You can use any.

CCCS, National Debtline, Payplan all have intermediaries.

    There's a full list here

CCCS DRO team and NDL are both in Birmingham, and are telephone based services so you can kinda do it from your own living room...
  • When I was doing mine the person at the NDL asked if I would like local or whether I had a problem with it. From my experience you get to choose...

What does this mean? I thought your name just goes onto the same register?

They do. The DRO register is run by the Insolvency Service for the whole of England.

Intermediaries are not part of the Insolvency Service. Some work for national organisations who don't usually have local staff you can go and sit down with. Instead you do it via phone, which in most cases is just fine. Or even more convenient for some.

Others like CAB, CAP etc have local advisors. So you can go and see them, or they can come and see you. If they are available in your area.

Thanks again Fermi. Would it be okay to PM you with a different specific question regarding the DRO? Of not, no probs! You just know what you are talking about.

If they are still available in your area.

CAP are not affected, though they do very few of these things.

As for the CAB, many of their debt specialist/DRO intermediaries are in wind-down mode now as their LSC funding finishes at the end of March. As the CAB does a large majority of DROs and hundreds of specialists are being laid off there will be an impact.

There will of course be a lot of local variation, so you need to ask.

Just having a grumble really at the lack of joined-up thinking on debt advice.
