Debt free date 25/11/2015 - Made It!
  • Hi All

Haven't posted in a while as everything was going okay. Our first payment on the DMP was made on the 10th November and the creditors paid on the 25th. Had a couple of phone calls from Mackenzie Hall DCA between thoose date but told them payment was pending and they were happy to wait.

Then, this week this is where is all gone tits up . My motorcycle chain and sprockets broke on the way into work on Monday and have spoken to the chap in the garage I take it to and it's going to cost around £200 to fix. This also includes getting the brakes done which I do every winter.

Not having the spare cash to get it fixed I am hoping that StepChange will allow me to alter the £259 Direct Debit for December, say taking only £10 and passing on token payments to each of my creditors, and this will allow me to pay for the bike.

Also, as the new baby is due in January as I'm thinking it might be better to redo our SOA to include the extra outgoings and starting fresh in the New Year.
    LBM - August 2012
    DMP Start - 01/11/2012
    DMP Finish - 01/09/2014

Thanks to all on MSE. :T

    Hi Stuart,

We had to drop our payment one month to get repairs done on our car. Some of our creditors made a fuss but it got sorted. It's a bit galling though to have to do this in your second month - but hey that's life, s*** happens. You have to get to work so you don't really have much choice but to use the money for repairs. Contact SC and I am sure they will be really helpful.

Sorry to hear about that Stuart and just when you through everything was started to be sorted out :(

When we spoke to CCCS about lowering a payment for some emergency repair work, I think they told us that they had a minimum token payment per creditor but I can't remember what it was. They did say if we couldn't meet that, we could make our own token payments so you can always do that.

It must be tough trying to work out your budget with a new arrival on the way so I think it could be a good idea to stick with token payments for December and January then work it all out again in February.

Good luck and please let us know how you get on :)

  • Morning

I missed the pinch punch first of the month but wanted to send good vibes to everyone out there. How is everyone? All set for a christmas without credit? This will be my third on the DMP, next one will be my last. I enjoy christmas better without the commercialism and knowing I'm not throwing things in the bin or putting things in a cupboard not to come out again. Regifting and being imaginative about presents certainly got me through the first one. With the second one I had learnt to manage the budget better, buy things in the right order to save money, have scrimper meals Dec/Jan to pull some back so could still have the extra splash when I wanted to. I used to go to many dos I wasnt bothered about but didn't want to look tight... no more... just go to what I want and can afford. Life is much simpler.

Anyone with tips, concerns or queries please do keep shouting up to keep the thread alive. As well as being here to support each other we need to keep the life line there for those pre DMP who don't know where to turn and this time of year and January can be particulrly lonely.

  • Thanks for that HH.

My first payment is due to go out to StepChange on Monday, so this is my first month of living to my new budget. Quite scary not having the credit to fall back on but at least I know I can go into the New Year feeling positive about tackling my debts.

I hope people continue to use this thread, as it really has been a lifeline to a DMP newbie.

  • Oh it's lovely to see some action on my favourite thread, I was beginning to look for tumbleweed rolling across the screen :rotfl:

This thread was a total lifeline to me when we first started out and I still often come here for help. I hope it's just that everyone is busy and it will get back to being lively here soon.

This will be our first Christmas without credit and it will feel so good that everything is paid for and we won't be dreading the bills in January. Everything except the fresh food is bought now and that's paid for on a supermarket gift card that we have been saving on all year. Am sure I will think of a few small things we need but there is nothing that can't come out of our budget.

Cooking everything from scratch, meal planning and bulk buying of bargain long life or no expiry goods are my top December tips. One of the spare bedrooms is still full of toilet rolls and soap powder from an irresistible bargain :D

I am really looking forward to going into 2013 which will bring us a year closer to our debt free date. I normally hate New Year but this one is something to look forward to, instead of CC bills to dread. New Year resolution is already made, more meal planning, am generally good but we have the occasional slip so a meal planner template is printed out and will live on the fridge and be taken out as the shopping list so no naughties can jump in the trolley!

  • Hi,

I'm new to all this so I apologise if I'm posting this in completely the wrong place. Have got myself into such a mess with payday loans. Also had a loan with HSBC that had MASSIVE monthly repayments and almost made it to the end (only had two repayments left) but just fell at the final hurdle and couldn't do it anymore.

A just starting a DMP with StepChange but am terrified of all my payday loan lenders saying no to this.

Wondered if anyone has experience with any of these and a DMP?

    Quickquid
    Payday UK
    Wageday Advance
    1monthloan
    Payday Express
    Early Payday Loan
    CFO
    Wonga
    247 Moneybox
    Mini Credit
    Speed Credit
    Swift Sterling

I know this list of payday loans is insane and frankly moronic. Just lost the plot a bit last year and it just escalated out of all control.

My DMP looks like it will be done within a year as I can make payments of 1125 to them monthly. They anticipate 11 months.

I'm just really worried as so far Speed Credit are being awful. Haven't defaulted on most of the rest yet but as of the 21st i will and am terrified about them phoning work as I am a teacher and if the office finds out, everyone will find out.

Also, how likely is it they will send debt collectors to work.

Please help, even if I am on the wrong forum as I am having a serious meltdown and am not really seeing a way out
  • Hi

Welcome to the forum and well done for facing up to the problem and contacting StepChange.

I haven't had any dealings with Pay Day Loan Companies but I'm sure somebody will be along shortly to advise you.

Hopefully once these companies receive your first payment from StepChange they will leave you alone. Eleven months to pay back what you have borrowed is one of the shortest DMP I have seen on here, so there shouldn't really be a problem.

There is always a chance that they could give you a call on your works number, but you can write to them requesting that they don't. They will not send debt collectors to your place of work as they will be receiving a payment monthly and have the lot back within a year, so it would probably cost them more to do so.

Good luck with everything, the first month is usually the hardest and then things start to settle down, once the creditors see that you are making an effort to pay them back.
