Gym Contract Issue

I have been a satisfied member of my local gym for over 7 years. The gym offer a special deal for civil servants, so I signed a rolling one month contract 7 years ago. Recently they have written to me to say that my monthly charge will be increasing to £41.75 per month from £37 per month. The original charge was £35 per month.

Initially I thought this increase was across the board for all civil servant members, but other colleagues were being charged only £36 per month. I wrote and said that an administrative error must have occurred, since I feel I should be charged £36 also.

They wrote back and said that I would have to sign a 12 month contract with a 3 month cancellation period after the 12 months. This seems very heavy handed on a loyal and reliable member.

I'm really not happy to give up my rolling one month contract. I don't feel I will need to cancel in the future, so the 12 months and 3 month notice shouldn't be an issue in practice, but i'm not happy being locked in. I have an adversion to heavy handed contracts.

Can I do anything about this?

Basically I want to keep my existing T&C's, but be charged the same as other civil servant members! I know it is only £5.75 extra per month, but this is nearly £70 per year!

Are the other civil servants on a rolling month or are they on the terms the gym are proposing to you? Make sure you are comparing like with like

  • the £36 is being offered to new members who happen to be civil servants (12M contract with the 3M notice).

When I joined 7 years ago, the offer was £35 per month on a one month rolling contract. I shouldn't have said that I knew what other existing civil servants are being charged. I only know for certain what new members are being offered.

Long story short, you're relying on their goodwill. You want the best of both worlds and unfortunately for you, they have no legal obligation to provide it.
