Barclaycard PPI

Hi,

Looking for some help or advice please?

I have been trying to claim back PPI that was added to my Barclycard credit card. They have sent me my original appilication that was done by post and I have ticked the box that asks for PPI to be added to the card.
This was done in 2004 and I can't recall whether or not I actually did tick this box, I have never asked for any other form of insurance on any other loan or credit card so I find this strange.
The PPI was paid for 4 years until I realised I was paying this and then cancelled.
Do I have a case to claim back what I have paid over the 4 years and if so what's the best way to go about this please?

I have already sent an email to their CEO Bob Diamond and I received a letter to state that they still wouldn't pay back what I feel I am owed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

If I was investigating this I would have to say "it looks like a tick and its where a tick should go if you want to apply for PPI so, on that basis, I think it is more than an even chance that you ticked the box".

You might not have intended to tick the box but we are talking Barclaycard, not Who Wants to be a Millionaire? they don't ask if it is your final answer or if you want to phone a friend or ask the audience. Having said that you do get a 50:50 - tick the box or don't tick it.
The PPI was paid for 4 years until I realised I was paying this and then cancelled.

So it took you around 50 statements all showing this payment before you noticed it.

Don't you think, to an impartial observer, that might suggest you do not take a great deal of notice of your documents and don't you think that might also be consistent with somebody absent-mindedly ticking a box on an application form without first reading what it referred to?

On the basis of what you have said, I think it is very weak.

That is because they do not think you are owed it. As far as they are concerned they were "on risk" - i.e. they were legally obliged to pay a valid claim whilst the cover was in force.

What is the date of the letter you received and does it tell you that you can go to the Financial Ombudsman Service?
  • Hi,

Thanks for the info you have added.
The letter was dated late December and they told me I can go to the Financial Ombudsman Service.

You are probably correct in the fact that I never used to pay any attention to my statements from Barclaycard, it was only when the PPI / bank charges etc came into the public focus that I paid more attention.

I will try and write back and explain my situation and see what they say.

    Thanks for your advice.

I was really "green" about money matters when I took my Barclaycard out. I eventually cancelled the PPI as I saw how much it was each month, but that too was quite a long time along the line, so to speak. It was when PPI become a big turning point that I realised I had been mis-sold. Unfortunately sometimes life takes over and you don't always pay attention to what is going on, so don't feel bad Michael 1969, you are not the only one!

I used the form from this web site to submit my claim to Barclaycard, it is very well structured and also takes into consideration whether you needed ppi.

Not my call but from what you have said, it was probably a mispurchase (your fault) rather than a missale (the bank's).

It may be better to be philosophical about it and learn from your mistakes.
