Motability

I thought about popping this in the car section, but this section seems a better choice, hopefully the mods agree!

My brother is due a new motability car in a couple of months. At the moment we have a wheelchair accessible Citroen Dispatch. Not the best car, and horrible to drive, but great that my brother can go out and about.

We had a look at some cars today, and were thinking about just getting another Dispatch, as it does everything we (well, my mum) needs. However, the company we went to last time, no longer do the Dispatch.

We need a fairly large car, there is six of us in the family, including my brother. Plus we need a fair bit of room in the back for all his equipment.

We had a look at the Vauxhall Vivaro, which I liked the look of, but is sadly too big for day to day use (going to the shop, think there was 20cm each side in the spaces).

Does anyone have any suggestions on cars/vans to look at? Also, companies that you've had experiences with, we are down south, but willing to go pretty much all over. Parents are going up to Manchester next month, so if need be can have a look up there.

Thanks for any help/advice :).
What is pi? Where did it come from?

  • Can they not get the citroen dispatch direct through citroen motability? The main (non franchised) Citroen Manchester dealership is on Upper Brook Street in central Manchester. There is also a franchised citron dealership in Stockport.

Apologise if you have already tried going direct.

Can Citroen do the wheelchair adaptations to the vehicle? I think thats why we went though the company we did last time. When we just had a Zafia, we went direct to Vauxhall.

    Thanks :).

So is what you are saying essentially that """it does everything your brother [ including equipment ] needs""", but the rest of the family of 6 who are not disabled would like a bigger car ?

    - any Motability dealer anywhere in the UK will arrange a sale of a 'Dispatch'
    - with local delivery to and frequent care & service arranged in your area as they are with your force
    - or you can choose from a wide range of alternative's in the Motability list
    - WAV's by definition are too big for average parking spaces but comfortable in BB spaces but you have two superstores within 2 miles

The thing is you can have any car on the list that fits your brothers needs [ with adaptations ] from anywhere in the country you choose, best of luck Keir :D

  • http://www.pentagon-citroen.co.uk/motability.php. Also got this dealership details off Citroen website, so yes it looks like they can do the adaptions. On the main citroen site you can serch for look dealers and tick motability and t will bring the ones up near you. To be honest I think all garages offering motabilty will be able to make adaptions, I know the ford could n my Dads motabilty car.

I don't think that's what he is saying at all. Look at the size of the dispatch, it is a big car already. He wants car suggestions but points out there is 6 in the family so any car suggested needs to accommodate them all.

Of course, whats the point of having a car that is suitable for my brother if we can't all go out together? I'm no longer classed as a dependant or whatever it is, but my two sisters are, so its not unreasonable not to expect them to go on family days out.

As I'm sure you are aware, my brother doesn't have to be with whoever is driving the car. Long as its being used for his benefit, IE going to Tesco to get the family shop.

I know that any place could get us a Dispatch, but I believe not everyone can get us a wheelchair adapted one, hence why we went to Gowrings last time.

Oh, and because it annoys me...its Kier. I before E and all that ;).

And going on one of Kier's recent posts, it's going to need to have a lot of leg and head room to accommodate the immediate family, as any family vehicle would need to do as, after all, you don't buy or lease a two seater if there are three of you, leaving one to catch the bus.
