Different versions of Word?

My friend has Word 2000 and I have Word 2002, if I create a document using my Word 2002, can my friend open/edit/save etc using his Word 2000?

If not, when does my friend need to do instead of buying new Word package?

Thank you

  • You should save it as Word97-2003 or such like ie as a .doc (can't remember which version of Word it is and I am on Linux at the mo, someone may tell us both)

As above any version of Word from 97-2003 will open the others files. If you buy a new version(2010) it uses a new format docx but will also open older files. If you want your version to open new files then there is a free compatibility pack that you can download.
Finally when you consider upgrading think about Libreoffice rather than paying. It's both free and good.
