KS2 literacy - any teachers?

I have been looking at "the punctuation triangle" as my DS's school call it. Can anyone recommend a children's grammar book which would explain all the puntuation marks? Or even better, does anyone know of an on-line resource that will explain what the punctuation marks mean in a child-friendly way?

P.S. for those of you who don't know what I am talking about it is
.
. ?
. ? , !
. ? , ... ! ' ""
- ? , ... ! ' "" : ; ( )

(It's the new ones at level 5 ones I particuarly want DS to get to grips with)

Thanks
Zziggi

  • There are lots of great punctuation games on topmarks.co.uk

For example - here is a link to apostrophe activities:

I can also recommend Alan Peat for all his writing resources.

primaryresources.co.uk also has lots of free resources that are made bteachers so you can have a search through and see what they might be using in their classrooms.

sparklebox is used by lots of teachers for displays and has free pdf's that you could print as posters for your child to have to remind them.

In terms of level 5 writing, look for some grammar books on complex sentences.

However, I would also look at developing vocabulary, planning and editing skills as your child will gain more marks with the writing being interesting and well developed than just punctuation dropped in.

    Hope that helps. x

  • We've got some relevant stuff on TheSchoolRun.com too.

There are some worksheets in our free downloads section that will help.

    There are also articles/downloads on;
Apostrophes – get them right every time
    Apostrophes revision
Full stops, commas and capital letters practice

We also have a Perfect Punctuation Workbook available too.

    Hope this helps,
    Michael.

:o Forgive me for the intrusion but that semi-colon should be a colon.
Just because it says so in the Mail, doesn't make it true.

We've been through this before on this forum but you may like to avoid the website and resources of a convicted peedo. Link to the TES here, link to the MSE thread here. :(

What I'll say as someone who marked KS2 English tests for a lot of years (probably not doing it this year since giving birth clashes somewhat!) - please please please don't get too hung up on the idea lots of kids get that they need to include ALL of them in every single piece of written work! The number of SATs I marked where you'd get to the final sentence and the poor kid obviously realised they hadn't included everything in the entire pyramid - and tried to ram them ALL into one sentence was quite marked for some schools - it's evidence of using some of them we're mainly looking for - not a hysterical "carpetbomb the entire final paragraph and draw a face with all the ones I've used".

Personally, I love semi-colons; they're so useful for linking ideas! :D
