refunds on buy on get one half price offers.

I recently purchased 2 dresses in a buy 1 get 1 half price offer, whereby the cheapest item was free.
When i went to wear the more expensive dress i noticed that the lining was torn so took it back, with receipt.
However they never had the same dress in my size. So I thought I would just get different item to the same value.
However when i got to the till, they only offered me a refund of £19.75 on the dress i believe i've paid £25 for. I queried this and explained that if it had been the cheaper of the 2 dress then i would only expect a refund of the lesser amount.
To this is was told that it was not in fact a buy one get one half price offer but a percentage discount offer. So that when I returned one of the items I had to pay back a percentage of the discount I'd received (not explained or advertised at time of purchase).
Surely this is miss selling? If it is a percentage discount then surely this should be advertised, also if they are not going to offer you a full refund on the more expensive item , should that not be made clear at the time of purchase i.e. small print explaining that should you need to return 1 of the items you may to receive the full retail value?
Any opinions advice greatly received sorry for the long post

Sorry, vee, but you've explained that very confusingly!
I think you mean that you bought two dresses priced at £25 and £21, so you got a discount of £10.50 (half the price of the cheaper item), equivalent to a approximately a 23% discount on the total £46 original price (23% x £46 is £10.58, so approx. £10.50).
Then when you returned the £25 dress, the refund (pro-rata) should have been 77% of £25 or £19.25, but they actually paid you £19.75.
That seems more than generous!
You are very wrong if you think you should be able to return the £25 dress and get £25. That would mean you ended up getting the full £10.50 discount, without buying the two dresses. Not fair at all!0
