Praise/Vent for Bank

    boy.   noun.
    1.
a male child, from birth to full growth, especially one less than 18 years of age.
    2.
a young man who lacks maturity, judgment, etc.
    3.
Informal . a grown man, especially when referred to familiarly.

I don't understand how referring to a person of a male persuasion as a "boy" is a snide comment. Particularly as this "boy" appeared to be under the age of 18, not to mention younger than me. I meant no harm in using this term. The fact that it has absolutely nothing to do with the post, and yet you picked it up shows that you were looking for something to get at. Please. This is a Praise/Vent board and I was merely doing so. I did not want, nor did I ask for any advice on the situation, but thank you for your (completely and wildly offensive) reply. Name calling in what I thought was a group of grown-ups makes me really sad. Thanks for your kindness. I believe your initial response to me was snide as the use of quotation marks around an issue which was irrelevant to the topic was really, in a word, pointless.

My understanding comes from the situation and what actually happened during it. I have no idea how my understanding of a situation I went through not 24 hours ago can be wrong, but I guess you might know better? Do let me know. Infact, don't. If your next reply is anything like the last, I'd rather not waste my time reading such vile nonsense.

    Sincerely,

    Thoroughly nasty piece of work.

I'd just like to say that in my area of Scotland anyway the word "boy" is used in place of man/person whatever very very extensively. It's the kind of thing I would write not thinking how it might come across to others- e.g. if someone told me I needed to speak to "that boy over there" and pointed to a 75 year old man I wouldn't bat an eyelid. Just think that it doesn't seem very fair to write sarky comments to the OP about a small variance in dialect!

Thank you to those of you who took time from your day to post a snide reply. I am fortunately more inclined to take the word of the branch staff than anonymous forumite but I appreciate it all the same.

Do you mean any branch staff, or just the ones who agree with you?
I came out absolutely fuming that [...] the boy didn't even check to see if there was any way around the situation

Owing to the fact that the branch member of staff at the Bank of Scotland changed from his answer of "No, we can't help you." to "but if you open an account with us, I'll see what I can do!" despite my protestations that I had a fully functioning account with another bank and would not be needing another meant that I was of the belief that he could not help me (which was true. He could not.). He said he couldn't help me, and I took his initial word for that. Even still, he booked me an appointment for a meeting I did not want, nor agree to, nor would I be able to make it. So much for listening to the customer.

I then contacted my own bank - something I, admittedly, should have done in the first place, who gave me different advice, and straight off the mark said they COULD help me, with minimum fuss on my part to boot. Score.

All this was outlined in my initial post, had you read that, instead of attacking/accusing me.

I wasn't actually attacking you, but I think you've made it perfectly clear in this thread why you struggled to get someone to help you.

  • You were sarcastic for no apparent reason. A deliberate attack. I haven't been a poster for very long here, but a long-time lurker. MSE used to be home to people who created a great atmosphere and were genuinely friendly and helpful. Seems to be full of keyboard warriors now, with unnecessary and volatile posts. No wonder newbies require a sidebar saying "be nice to me", when this is the way people act & react.

Also, at no point have I said, nor hinted at "struggling to find someone to help me". That turn of phrase is only slightly exagerrated on your part. Out of two people asked, one could not help me, and one could. No struggle involved, these things happen.. although the dialing of the telephone number for my branch sure was tedious.

It seems there is a difference of opinion on this between The Law Society and the Payments Council, both parties giving their opinion on the law. Lawyers or Bankers, who would you trust on a point of law ?
  • Cheques Act 1986 states that cheques MUST go into an account bearing the payees name, in this case, a joint account.

Banks which accept incorrect cheques are leaving themselves wide open for prosection. Ignorance by bank tellers is no excuse.
