Savings account & debit card for teenagers

Hi

Can over 13's have a debit card with an account? Or is the only option a prepay card?

Thanks for looking.

Yes. My teens want one of these accts- their friends have them. I have resisted, as I know they will spend the money. Think twice ;-)

Our DD has a debit card account which we put a set amount in each month and she is in charge of her budget inc her phone PAYG & some clothing allowance (she recently went out for a nice coat with friends and came back with a cheaper coat as she went to Nandos for lunch) Thats budgeting... She knows she cannot go over what she has in the bank and gives her a good idea of some costs and responsibilitys.

Edit ::::: She is with Santander

I'm with you greenface - I believe that it is down to parents to educate their children how to manage their own finances and take responsibility for budgeting, spending and saving.

I agree, but i have 3 boys. All taught the same, 2 are good with money, one not as. So, I can't let one twin have a DC and one twin not. I told them both, if they got jobs and earned their own money they could have one.

the one who is good with money has applied for a number of jobs (but 50 applicants for 2 part time posts isn't easy)but the other just talks about doing it. So neither gets them as I can't stand the argument that would follow if I let the one who is 'good' with money get one (he bTW, has a safe into which he now puts his pocket money so has funds 'on tap' to circumvent my no DC clause lol). If they weren't twins, I might have done, but I have to treat them the same (unless we are talking a punishment for something).

Old post but I was looking for something like this for my two youngest 15 and 12. I was considering the new CitizenCard but did not like the charge for withdrawing cash or the £15 charge for the card. Did like the idea of their age and picture on the front.

However, told about Halifax Express Cash account which comes with a debit card, free withdrawals and no charges for using card in stores etc. They also cannot go overdrawn on this account, if money not there then transaction gets refused.

Going to check it out tomorrow.

    Of course they do !

What they are not supposed to do is allow any credit (i.e.debt) below 18 years
