Help - HALIFAX BANK CHARGES!!!

Options
Hi,
I wrote to my bank - Halifax back in July 2011 requesting my last 6 years bank statement on all three of my accounts with them. By November i still hadn't recieved them so phoned them. After being on the phone for 45 minutes they agreed to compensate me £30 for my telephone used for the call and rapidly sent out the staements.
On December 22nd i sent them a letter requesting to claim back 6 years worth of bank charges due to finacial hardship, totalling around £1400. I have phoned them this evening as i have not yet recieved anything from them and i believ they only have 14 days to respond? They told me they have not recieved any such letter and that i needn't bother as during a ruling 2 years ago, banks no longer had to pay back this money. I advised her that many friends and family had done so recently and therefore i was going to aswell. She asked me to take my letter into my local branch.

Could anyone advise wether or not they have had similar issues with Halifax or is it just me and should i resend the letter or take it to the branch?

Please help, as i have 18 month old triplets and this money would really come in useful!!!

Thanks in advance

  • Hi, if you are in genuine financial hardship then you should send a 2nd letter & once 8 weeks are up (from the date of 1st letter) complain to the financial ombudsman under the hardship route.

Be aware though that you really have to be in extreme dire straits financially to get anything back. The only other option is to sit tight & see if anything happens with the GLC court battle which I hope is still going on, but not heard much recently myself.
  • What's the address you're writing to? Seems a little strange that they've both gone missing!
But they're right, unless you're in genuine hardship there's no point, and even if they agree that you are in hardship and that the charges are making your situation worse they don't have to refund a penny.
