Breakdown cover/roadside assistance for car

It is so difficult to compare these deals now - small print is a nightmare.
I think I read that Norwich Union just bought RAC so it may be "beefing up" the cover at the moment in order to promote it.
The thing I hate most about the cheap cover thgey offer at £35 or £38 or whatever is that most of them will only tow you 10km (or is it 10miles?) to a garage you nominate, and the patrolmen seem to be told to do that more often than fix your car even though very often they CAN fix your car they are pressed to just get you out of the system as fast as possible and move on to the next job.
AA offer the replacement vehicle as well if they don't fix yours, but it is only one day cover and you will be lucky to be offered anything bigger than one of those two seat Smart cars with an AA logo on the side irrespective of how big your car is. And I am not sure they promise to take you to Hertz to get it!0 -
"Can anyone tell me which is the cheapest/best deal for breakdown cover/roadside assistance?"
Not without further information.
It depends on ..
how many cars it's for
how many people it's for
what level of cover you want
what geogrpahic area you want
Whether you are prepared to "pay & claim"
Martin has an article on this that you'd be well advised to read.
Also try https://www.moneysaupermarket.com but note they don't include AutoAid.
"I have received an email from RAC offering joint cover for £38, but wondered if I could better this."
Almost certainly but depends on the questions above.
I suspect the RAC cover is fairly limited.
I have platinum cover for £40 with First call. It's not pay & claim. Does everything except Europe. It's vehicle based but covers ANY driver.0 -
I only want a fairly basic policy as it's to cover a new car.
It will be for 1 vehicle and to cover two people. I live in the Surrey area and don't want the extras such as Home Start or replacement car.Sam0 -
the cheapest is Autoaid - £29 for all inclusive - includes you and your spouse. Look at the articles. They don't have a website but you ring them on 01277 235500 Boncaster LTD. Ins. Services.0

*New* car? Check that breakdown cover isn't included in the manufacturer's warranty before you shell out...I really must stop loafing and get back to work...0
