Been upgraded to an RBS Black account without being asked.

Hi
I've received an email from RBS, using my correct name, correct (partial) account number and postcode, telling me I am being upgraded from a Royalties private to a Black account on the 18th Jan. Has anybody else had this? Wouldn't mind but the fee is £24 a month, and if I had applied I would have been refused as I don't even earn 20% of the 100k minimum you need to be earning.
Why have they done this?

Its due to the new account changes the Royalties Private no longer exists as an account.Im an ex employee RBS GroupHowever Any Opinion Given On MSE Is Strictly My Own0

Personally I'd much rather have the benefits of the select silver

According to this page the Black Account has replaced Royalties Private so it's probably genuine, although I'm slightly surprised they have informed you by email. However, I'm not sure why you would have had a Royalties Private account if you're earning less than £20K, did you really want to be paying £18 a month for an account? Because if you could afford that and felt the benefits outweighed the costs I would have thought the extra £6 a month would have been affordable too. Or is it that you were 'convinced' to open a Royalties Private account when in fact you didn't really need a packaged account at all?0

To be honest I hadn't noticed I had a "private" royalties account, I was pretty sure I had only applied for the normal account, wasn't until the other day when a new "private" chequebook arrived it made me go look. Thanks for replying guys, you've been really helpful but I'll probably ask them to change it.
Edited to add: I've had this bank account for years and I've never noticed "Private" written on my chequebook before, so I'm wondering if this is a new change too. How confusing!0 -
Depending on your circumstances I would ask to be downgraded to the select silver if thats the account you prefer.Im an ex employee RBS GroupHowever Any Opinion Given On MSE Is Strictly My Own0
