Replacement for fluorescent light in kitchen

I have just replaced my fluorescent light in my kitchen, it is a polylux f36/830 which I managed to buy at Wilkinson. The plastic cover is cracked and at the moment I am using sellotape which is not ideal to stick it together. I have been trying to buy a replacement cover and cannot find the one I have got. The tube is 4ft long and wicks is selling a single diffuser but it seems wider than the one I have got. My other option is to replace the whole unit and electrtician is asking me for £30 to do the job. Does anybody know whether the wicks one although wider might fit? Thanks

I doubt it, but we can't tell without seeing both fittings. Can you not track down the Polylux one?0

Do you really need a plastic cover? I take it you mean the diffuser that hides the tube from view?
It does make it look nicer, but also reduces the light. It's not essential, I certainly would not be paying £30 for a new fitting.
A diffuser off a different fitting would not fit yours, you would need the correct one.0 -
The diffuser certainly isn't essential - most older fluorescent fittings don't have them, simply because eventually they break and haven't been replaced. If you find the make of fitting, you may be able to get a new diffuser.Solar install June 2022, Bath

I believe you are allowed to replace an existing kitchen light fitting yourself (please check). It goes without saying that you should turn off the power at the fuse box, and make sure you know how to rewire it. Generally you use a couple of screws to attach the unit to a ceiling joist above the plaster. A line drawn between the two existing screws (assuming two) will tell you the line of the joist. Use a drill to make a pilot hole into the plaster and wood, which helps guide the screw in, otherwise it'll go all wonky.Warning: This forum may contain nuts.0
