Bought our first house, how do we sort the electric out?

You are in a deemed contract with the existing supplier, so take opening readings on day one and register for an account with them. Once that's done, you can use a comp site with your estimated annual kWh readings to find the best deal. A switch will then take 4 to 5 weeks.
You won't be locked in, as the default tariff you will be placed on, unless you request otherwise, is Standard, which has no minimum term..
Unless it is Scottish Power who tied us in to a contract without telling us then charged us to change supplier.

I have Economy 7 heating and find it works quite well. It can drop a little cold in the late evening in the depths of winter, but then I'm one of those people who thinks you should be wearing a thick jumper at home in the winter. On the plus side, you don't have to pay a gas standing charge if you don't have gas at all, plus you don't need servicing, safety checks, a service contract, etc. which all add costs to gas heating that shouldn't be ignored.0
