Lloyds Tsb cancels my bank account

Hi,

Hoping to get some advice on what to do next.

I have had an account with Lloyds Tsb for 2years, and yesterday morning i withdrew some money (£10) then at about 4.30pm decided i needed another (£10) only for the cash point to retain my bank card.

I went into a branch to ask for my card back and only for the guy to say that my account has been requested to be cancelled within 60days. That the bank do reviews on their customers and they have decided i do not fit their requirment. This came as a shock and i said i wanted to know more and the reason why all of a sudden i can not bank with them anymore. the guy then said they could not tell me anything more.

I am furious about this, Lloyds is the main/only bank that i use. I am a student and work as a carer. get about £600/month.

I had about £2300 left in the account which the guy advised me to withdraw yesterday.

I have rang them over and over again requesting for a reason and i do understand that it most be very important for them to have closed my account. So i want to know what i have done wrong, fraud is one of the main reasons things like this happen. which i believe i have not committed.

I tried using experian to check this out, but because i do not have any my card number i could get registered on the site. I have rang the bank to get my bank details including the number and they said they can not disclose this information.

I hope someone can give me advice on what i should do next or who to write to etc so i know what is going on and what they are penalizing me for

Thanks

    Hello,

Unfortunately the bank are within their right to close your account if you no longer meet their criteria.

I'd suggest applying online for an account with a different bank - you will normally get a decision instantly (subject to verification of details), or go in branch.
  • thanks Balmk for the reply,

Yeah i went into Natwest today to open a new one but because i am international i am not allowed to have more than one account(according to the bank). so I would have to wait 5-10days for the closing statement to be posted to me by lloyds, take that into natwest before a new account would be opened for me.

so i will just accept this inconveniance and move on with my life, I hope this does not affect be legally or my credit rating?

    btw i have no overdraft.

Check your credit report for fraud or CIFAS markers, these make the banks run away on fire and jump out the window.

That is absolutely untrue and complete !!!!!!!! from Natwest. The branch staff working for Natwest do not have a clue what they are talking about for what ever reason.(I have discussed this in detail in my other post from my own experience).

NO you do not have to wait till Lloyds sends you the closing statement, You can have more than 1 account even if you are international. No bank can really deny you an account just on the basis that you have another account with another bank, but they can obviously ask you why you want to open another account. This could be for budgeting purposes or could just be an expense a/c etc.

I suggest you try these following bank in the list of order :

    1.HSBC
    2.Barclays
3.CO-Operative/Smile (online banking not that good but good customer service).
4.Nationwide (Apply online and they almost everytime give an instant decision online).
5.Santander (If you cannot get an a/c in any of the above which I doubt).
    6.Natwest

Do let us know how you get on, and once again you do not have to wait for Lloyds to sent a closing statement.

  • Thanks everyone for the reply...

I will go into Barclays tomorrow and see if i can open an account with them.

Right now i am looking for ways to get my credit rating. Since i no longer have a bank card and therefore a card number this is proving to be my worst nightmare.

Under a deal with the regulators, there's a presumption that anybody can have at least a basic account, except for a list of exceptions related to bad debt or crime.

There's skulduggery afoot here, and I suspect the Borders Agency is at the back of it. It's well known that the Tories' ludicrous immigration targets can only be met by drastically reducing the number of overseas students in the country.

So far there's no reason to think the OP will meet any other bank's criteria any better than Lloyds', which aren't known for being particularly stringent.

Get a £2 postal order (from Post Office, I believe, though will cost 50p) and send off form.

I wouldn't be surprised if Immigration and Borders have something to do with this as this exact thing happened to my best friend from Mauritius, he had approx £7-8k in his account to pay his fees and they impounded the money and he had a hell of a fight to get it back. They thought he was money laundering and it almost got him kicked out of uni for unpaid fees and disbarred (law student). They soon released the money when he got his sponsor, a top lawyer to threaten legal action!

Try Barclays as they have always been pretty good to me, avoid NatWest like the plague- horrible establishment!!
