Mortage protection insurence

After a home visit from a financial advisor from Awd finance I was told the best way to pay to protect my income for the duration of my mortage was to pay a fee up front and add this to my overall mortage. This sum was around 5 thousand pounds. After speaking to friends and family no-one thinks this was a good option as I'm only tied into my current mortgage for 5 years and 1000 pounds a year seems an awful lot, I feel I have been had by this advisor who was after a good premium, I have also been informed this advisor no longer works for Awd can I claim back this payment I made them? Is there anyone who can help?
