Braun shaver fault, told it cannot be replaced!

Hi all,

Back in January 2009 I bought a Braun Cruzer 4 electric shaver from Argos. Unfortunately in May 2010 it became faulty and wouldn't switch on. As Braun shavers are covered by a 2 year warranty I sent it to Braun's approved service provider (Olympic Shaver Centre in Nottingham) for repair.

It was promptly replaced and sent back to me within a few days. Great service from them so far, I thought.

However, my replacement has now also become faulty this month (January 2012) with exactly the same fault. I phoned Olympic and they said that the warranty covers only the FIRST unit and not the replacement they sent me in May 2010. They said they could still look at my shaver but it will be chargeable. Rubbish!

Are they right? I would've thought that a new 2 year warranty would apply to the new shaver they issued in May 2010, meaning that it should still be in warranty?

I have the original Argos receipt for the first shaver from January 2009 and the invoice/dispatch note from Olympic in May 2010 for the replacement shaver.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Nathan :)

As a warranty is on top of your statutory rights, the manufacturer can include pretty much any terms they like. Do you have any terms and conditions from the original warranty?

Unfortunately not. Every Braun product I have purchased comes with rather minimal packaging and documentation, with little mention of the 2 year warranty (usually only on the side of the box).

I've also looked on the Braun service website for documentation that accompanies my Cruzer 4. All I can find is the user manual.

Looks like I'll either have to bite the bullet and buy a new Series 3-340s (which admittedly I've had my eye on for a while), or try my luck by sending it without the Argos receipt and tick the box on the warranty form which says, "No proof of purchase. If no proof of purchase is provided we will use the production date code stamped on the unit to determine if it is within the 2 year warranty".

I just hope it was manufactured after January 2010! :)

Warranties usually last from the date of original purchase.
So in your case they would probably repair your current shaver up until January 2011... two years from original purchase in January 2009.

Looks like your latest plan may work though. :D
