Gas Advice Needed

I had a larger than usual bill a year ago and could not afford to pay for it in full due to being on benefits. Npower agreed that I could pay the bill off at three pounds per week if I had a prepayment installed. I started off ok but I also received a larger than average electric bill and agreed the same with Npower. As I never used the gas for a year just before Xmas I looked at my meter and about £100 pounds had run up debt even though I had never used it. What is the best way as three pounds a week is never going to get rid it seems I am just paying about £3.50 weekly just for having the meter in. Obviously if I carry on there is going to be another £100 plus debt for the ornamental meter. Any advice greatly appreciated.

Do you use gas at all? How do you heat your property?:footie:
Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

Standing charge?0

A year's standing charges on a gas account can easily total £100 (30p per day)-why did you agree to a PPM on that account if you weren't going to use the supply? All you had to do was to agree a different method to repay the debt, and switch to a NSC tariff on the existing credit meter. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

there is a daily standing charge on the meter, so now as the gas meter hasnt been topped up to allow the standing charge to build as an additional debt, you will find that 70% of every top up you make is taken straight away and it will gradually pay back the standing charge thats built up and the arrears of the debt payments that havent been made.0
