Hiya, went today to halifax, where i've been banking for around 10 years and the system denied me a student bank account.

I dont owe any money(contracts, bills, tax) apart from my student loan. never been taken to court regarding credit issues.

however, the system denied me a student bank account... what can i do? i thought maybe my credit history was bad, i registered with equifax and paid the 2 quid for credit report, and all appears to be very clean.

Anyone know what the problem is?

  • Did you have all the right proof in terms of paperwork? e.g. letter of acceptance from the university/college etc. - (can't remember what else they need)

Did you speak with an advisor or do it yourself online?
  • I had all the right paperwork, proof of identity and address. but the stage where the system does the credit scoring or check, it says i was only eligible for a cash card :S !!!!!!.

I went to my local branch.

    Get used to it

The fact you are a student does not mean you are any more likely to pass a credit check

Either try another bank or accept it

I had a similar problem with Bank of Scotland (who were exact same as Halifax at the time). Went to RBS (go to Natwest if you're in England) and had absolutely no problem, got a student account and student credit card easily.

Went to Barclays, got a student bank account with an overdraft activated within the hour. However I had already gone up to other banks and booked for two appointments for tomorrow. I read in this forum that is not illegal to hold multiple student bank accounts, how likely is it that I qualify for another student account, of course not letting them know that I have one in the first place.

Will they know that I got one? I don't think so, why do they ask me if I have one in the first place, they could just check in the system

Its often a term and condition of Student accounts that you don't bank with anyone else.

  • It's also normal to have a clause that your student loan / grant must be paid into the account. RBS had a condition that they would only send out the debit card once the account had been credited with your student loan / grant.

If you're happy with the account Barclays have given you then stick with it.

  • From my experience OP, Halifax are really super strict with their student account. Barclays have a useless interest-free overdraft and it's almost impossible to get them to increase it beyond the minimum £200. The thing about Barclays is that they will most likely accept you as for student accounts the decision to accept is at the discretion of the manager.

If you think you're credit score is good enough, I would suggest going to the Co-op as they offer you an instant interest-free overdraft of at least £1400 upon acceptance. Natwest and Lloyds are generous with their overdrafts as well.
  • They will know about your other accounts when they credit score you.
You may well get a student account but it is unlikely that you will get another interest free overdraft facility.
