Hi all, as title I have a movie which is avi and want to convert it so I can put it on to a dvd and my sister can play it on her dvd player. Do I need to buy software for this or is there any free stuff that would do it?
Many thanks

DVD Flick has always worked for me:

You may find your dvd player will play .avi files anyway.

You don't say what operating system you are using but I'm assuming Windows.
Windows comes with a couple of very useful programs;
Windows Movie Maker
Windows DVD Maker
There are a couple of caveats. Windows XP can't burn DVDs without additional software and doesn't have DVD maker, Windows 7 can burn DVDs
Movie Maker in Windows 7 is part of the Windows Live group of programs. Enter Windows Live Essentials into Google and you can download Movie Maker for free.
Movie Maker should convert the .avi to DVD format, you can also edit the movie if required. Once done you can then create the DVD complete with menus etc. using DVD Maker which you should already have.
I think there's a create DVD button in Movie Maker that will start DVD maker for you. Sorry if this is a bit vague but it's been a while since I used Windows, I'm a Mac user. :0)
If you are still running XP then you will need a DVD authoring program.One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.0 -
DVDStyler is a cross-platform free DVD authoring application for the creation of professional-looking DVDs. It allows not only burning of video files on DVD that can be played practically on any standalone DVD player, but also creation of individually designed DVD menus. It is Open Source Software and is completely free

Freemake is free but ensure that you don't install the toolbar/adware stuff which you need to untick on installation.
FreeStudio is another but not really quite as good IMO.
There are quite a few freeware conversion applications although many have now become adware infested. SUPER was one of them and so is MediaCoder.0 -
