Renault Espace - Clutch Problem?
Need some help here
I have a renault Espace 2ltr - Petrol - 1995 registration,
I was driving to work the other day and I went to change gear, Suddenly there was a loud bang and I was unable to change gear. I stopped and wondered what the hell happened. Noticed that the clutch pedal was floored, So I thought the cable had sanpped. I bought a new cable and got the car taken to the local garage. The mechanic advised me that the cable was intact and did not need replaced. He said that the clucth ratchett had gone on the car and that it was a massive job to be fixed.
I have been quoted in excess of £400 to supply and fit this.
Does anyone know if this sounds like the correct fault?
Is £400 plus expensive?
Thanks for your help

The clutch ratchet is a plastic quadrant with teeth. They're about a £20 to buy. Did the mechanic have a 10 gallon hat and a fine pair of gold plated stetsons? This country is called Great Britain. It would be called Amazing Britain if it wasn't for people like you pulling the average down0

I think its more the man power as I am led to believe that the entire engine needs to come outIf I have been helpful - Hit the Thanks button0 -

Isn't the clutch ratchet the plastic bit attached to the clutch pedal? The engine shouldn't have to come out for that.
My wife had exactly the same symptoms on her Peugeot though, and that turned out to be a failed clutch release bearing. It had been squealing for some time though so she told me afterwards.
That went on boxing day and was taken into Nationwide Autocentres the next day. It also cost £400 which I think was a bit steep, but we really had no other option as she needed the car urgently.0 -

Yeah it is. There's no need for the engine to be removed considering the ratchet is not in the engine bay.marcellep wrote:lol Thanks least someone told me what the hell it is,

It's a one man job. All they need to do is get to where the clutch pedal is. I'm struggling to see how they need to remove the engine to fix it. I'd strongly suggest taking it to another garage. This country is called Great Britain. It would be called Amazing Britain if it wasn't for people like you pulling the average down0 -
as it is the older style espace the engine does need to come out, i have this on very good authority0

i have replaced this ratchet in the same car a little while ago in under hour and half, and that was including 3 cups of coffee and 5 fags!0

Very different thoughts here, I have had 4 garages all tell me that the engine needs to come out. My fathers friend is an MOT inspecter and he also said the engine needs to come out. I guess ill just have to fork out £500 unless anyone knows somewhere cheaper in EdinburghIf I have been helpful - Hit the Thanks button0
