Game - Christmas 2011 returns offer on receipt

Options
Does anyone still have a game in-store receipt, with details of their christmas returns policy for 2011 on the reverse ??

I'm pretty sure it offered a cash refund for unwanted items returned in resalable condition before the 7th Jan 2012, but now I'm being told by Game it's only instore credit you get.

This was specifically for the ROI, but I wouldn't mind hearing from UK customers too.

If anyone managed to get a book returned for cash I'd love to hear from them as that's the type of item I'm trying to have returned.

Well surely since you are returning your item under this policy, you already have the receipt?

If not, you're relying on their goodwill as most stores returns policies require the receipt to be produced. And while proof of purchase can be used as proof when your item is faulty.....for the stores own policy they can insist on the receipt as this is over and above your statutory rights.

  • Possibly irrelevant, but it's now the 10th Jan. :p

That's the one.. So it seems they're claiming that the refund has to be in the form of store credit, and not cash.

Surely a refund is for cash, if it was for store credit you'd expect it to be stated as such.

Gift receipt or normal receipt that you are using?

If gift, then no surprise on credit - mind you you say book, is it a players guide? Its it shrink wrapped?

I think all Game are trying to say here is that they will extend their usual refund and/or exchange period until 7 January.

If they would normally offer a store credit for that type of return, I think it quite reasonable that they do the same during this seasonal extension.

Not a lot of room on the back of a receipt for great detail is there?

The fact the OP is on here asking for details of what the receipt states leads me to believe they dont have a receipt although I may be wrong.

OP do you actually have the receipt or not?

  • Original receipt was handed in when book was returned to meet the Jan 7th deadline.

Book was indeed a players guide, was not shrink-wrapped and was returned due to the usual gouging some corporates indulge in of charging EUR 22 for a book that was available in the UK at the time for GBP 15 (approx 20% surcharge) In fact when I got back to the UK I bought it again for GBP 13

Hmm, I see where you're coming from but their usual terms are 28 day return for an unwanted item anyhow, so why bother making an explicit statement if it only mirrors what the stores already do.

I think I'm screwed tbh. They've kept the terms ambiguous enough to cover their !!!!!!, and as Kenny's immortal words state "You've got to know when to hold 'em, Know when to fold 'em"

I've asked their customer service people to reconsider, but if that goes against me I can only vote with my wallet. It will be a cold day in hell before I shop there again (once I've spent my EUR 22 )

Personally, when I saw this policy advertised in the store at the time I made the purchase, I also assumed that all purchases would be refunded, in cash/on card if I decided to return them (since I was buying as a gift, this was relevant).

The GAME website explains the policy in greater detail. Some purchases are excluded, but books are not.

From the information available, I would have sided with the OP - this book should have been covered by the returns policy, provided that the other conditions (proof of purchase, and unopened) are met. I guess the onus then is whether the OP can to prove that the book is unopened, or whether GAME need to prove it was opened.

Did you read part/all of the book, OP? If not, then it seems fair to me that you get a refund.
