PPI Claim Advice

Hi all,
This is my first post so please go easy on me
.
I'm after some advice regarding attempting to claim back the PPI that I have paid for many years on my Barclaycard. I opened my barclaycard account way back in the 90's (can't remember exactly when but i'm guessing mid 90's) but I don't actually remember asking for or being offered PPI. As in a lot of cases I ended up having PPI on my account and have paid it for all these, well up until about 2 years ago at least, when I finally had enough and phoned Barclaycard to cancel it. The account is still open and I do have a balance on it.
My question is..... What do you peeps think would be the best course of action to take next? I obviously know the account number so was thinking of going straight for a claim but as I can't remember exactly when my account (and therefore the PPI) started I was wondering if I should submit an SAR so I have more information in my possession. I have read that they may only have documents going back 6 years which would not take me back to when I opened the account so i'm not sure this would be worthwhile anyway.
I'm sorry for rattling on but i'm really not sure what steps to take next.
Many thanks for your patience and I hope I haven't bored you too much
