It implies the operating system sees the disk as unformatted. Partition recovery software may help but given you say it says the disk is inaccesible, I fear your disk is damaged and the data is lost.Friendly greeting!0

As above - I can't do that as it says it can't access it.

I've tried tools like Power Data Recovery to no avail, but hope you fare better...
Thanks dan my eyes are messing with me did not spot the raw bit,
Kiki , not brilliant news we may get something off of it using a Linux live system or maybe something else. I have to go eat , will have a think over brain food and someone else may pop up with suggestions. Good Luck for now4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex . What's really odd, though, is that when the HDD is in my laptop, it *does* boot up Windows. Not completely, as it gets stuck. But it's reading *something* on there to get far enough to the Microsoft loading part. So I know that the E partition isn't empty.
Is it possible that the disk caddy is having problems dealing with the partition element? That the partition to USB is interfering somehow? If I stick it in a PC without the USB transition would that help it along? </ever hopeful>' <-- See that? It's called an apostrophe. It does not mean "hey, look out, here comes an S".0 -
does it still 'kind of' boot up when in the laptop? i'm surprised at least! but don't think the caddy/usb link is your problem.
as dcm says, maybe someone else has an idea. bump the thread tomorrow if no joy!Friendly greeting!0 -

Yes, that's what I'm saying - it does boot to the Microsoft Windows piece then just doesn't know what to do with itself after that, and goes no further. But it obviously has enough files to get that far. When I boot with the DOS prompt so I can see the commands, it runs through loads of Windows\drivers files until it hits one and gets no further.
None of the other safe modes can get past that stage, either, which is why I assumed it was a problem with Windows and that my data would be accessible...

sorry, i meant if you put it back in NOW and try to boot, will it get so far (figuring it may no longer). sorry but not obv. if you're saying it DOES or it DID (before you took it out, put in caddy etc)Friendly greeting!0

what happened on screen when you tried to reinstall windows without a hard disk in.
unless it's a big laptop, 17", it's unlikely to have 2 hard disks in.
which is the last driver it hits before stopping, mup??
what make is the hard disk, Toshiba?!!

Going back to the recovery disk, can you boot with that to the Recovery Environment?

When pressing f8, have you disabled "automatic restart on system failure" If you haven't do that and try to boot into windows - see if you get a blue screen error and make a note of any information.
