this sort of thing really annoys me.

If you have a problem, see the head for clarification.

Sorry? what annoys you teacherandmum? you have to be more specific.
  • Sorry, have not read all the other posts, I am currently training to be 'just' a teaching assistant.

TA's need to be fully aware of the curriculum, Health and Safety, all School Policies, First Aid etc, and will have spent ALOT of time shaddowing teachers and other support staff, and training, so we do know what we are doing!!

Also once a TA has HLTA status they are qualified to Teach. (This stands for Higher Level Teaching Assistant.) Obviously there is always another more experienced member of staff to go to if need be!!

Perhaps the school felt it best to keep a well known adult in the class rather than getting someone new in and disrupting the children!

It's a proffesion where a lot of emphasis is also the kind of person you are and what transferable skills you can bring to the job! It also goes quite unapreciated by many who do not know the role, or have the out-dated opinion that we only assist because we can't teach:eek:!!

Anyway, grumble over, any issues then talk to a member of staff you feel comfortable with (perhaps a qualified teacher:p)

perhaps I should explain a bit more - I spent a couple of years working as a student support tutor in the college I was attending. The rule was that I could cover for absence of the tutor only after the tutor 'took the register' and I was NOT allowed to teach the class. effectively it meant I could 'babysit' them if the tutor wasnt present, I find it difficult to get my head around the fact that unqualified people can 'teach' our three/four year olds to the curriculum - yet I couldnt actually 'teach' adults? even though I was qualified in thier subject! strange rules to me!

The rules don't cover adults. A college can petty much let anyone teach adults - although most require qualifications in lifelong learning and the subject. Similar thing applies under school age. The college may have rules saying that a support tutor cannot teach but there is nothing in law stopping you.

I don't quite understand why you were 'covering' adults anyway, usually if the regular lecturer is off the session is rescheduled or private study is set.
