I hope this is in the right place, i am desperate for help!
On saturday we collected a used 1999 car that we had left a £100 deposit on at a garage.
The cost agreed to pay in total was £600 but the MOT was to be done in with this agreement.
Please dont say "its an old car", we got what we could afford to hopefully keep us going while we saved for a newer car (better than nothing).
Anyhow the garage took 3 days longer to get the car ready for us and when my DH collected it Saturday all seemed well.
We did not drive it untill i needed to pop out a few hours later on sat night and the damn thing would not start. We managed to get it started by pressing on the gas for a while but then while driving it kept cutting out.
We had to turn round before we got stuck anywhere.
First thing the next day we calle dthe garage and he advised us to try running it around as it did run out of petrol when he had it and it may have rubbish in the lines and if not bring it back to him.
We couldnt even start it to try! My bro in law had to come over to jump start it with us and it still kept cutting out and now overheating, did'nt even make it a mile up the road.
Iv called back tonight telling him we cant get it there, once again he's saying to try to get it up tommorow. Iv said to him what am i meant to do if i cant? He said he will recover it if not, but to try first.
He has refused to return our money even if we wavered the cost of MOT, i mean we called him the very next morning after we had it (he was closed on the sat evening).
The garage is 12 miles away and there is no way we can get it to him, i think hes fobbing me off.
We cant afford to loose the money it ALL we had.
Iv read a bit on trading standards page but its never going to be as easy when i have to face him by myself (DH at work).
sorry its long but i really need advice, this car is obvioulsy going to blow up and im so stressed:mad:

On what grounds?
Op had the opportunity to inspect the quality of the vehicle before purchasing. It also passed an MOT therefore roadworthy. And SoGA also considers price paid when determining quality, which in this case is very low.
In order to reject it, op would need to discover what the fault is and for that fault to be an inherent fault or failure, and not caused by wear and tear due to its age (for which based on the price I imagine is quite old indeed).
Fortunately within the first 6 months op, the burden of proof is on the dealer to prove the fault wasn't inherent. So they would perhaps inspect the vehicle and advise of the problem. You can then go from there.
But although I appreciate you need a motor and have little money, you do get what you pay for. So the vehicle will not be as problem free as hoped.0 -

On the grounds it's not fit for purpose...it wont start (which happened on day collected) and is overheating. OP has not had the car a sufficient length of time to deemed to have accepted it. The OP told us all how old the car is.0
