Buying a House Alarm - What to look for?

Due to a recent spate of burglaries in the area, we're looking to get a decent house alarm but bit confused by the vast choice. Don't really want one that you end up having to pay a premium every month for the monitoring but happy to spend upto about £750.
Do we need to spend this much though to get something decent?
Any recommendations would be great!
Thanks

No need for a monitoring company these days. We have a system that is wireless and includes video straight to my ipod. I can check all cameras, and get instant text or e-mail if the alarm is set off. (never happened but I have tested it). This system was a little over your budget, but my theory was an alarm that no one took any notice of, was useless. The system can also be added to if the need arises. PM me and I will send details. 80)0
