What is an indemnity Claim

I have just got my barclaycard statement and there is an item on there for £533 which says it is an indemnity claim. I don't even know what indemnity claim means. I have spoken to Barclaycard but they were very unhelpful. They say they don't know what it means either but kept asking me questions about my other Barclays accounts. I don't have any other barclays accounts as I bank with first direct. I am very worried about this now but don't know where to go for more information. I am not aware of owing anyone any money.

Can anyone shed any light on what this means?

    Hi,

To my knowledge an indemnity claim usually refers to a Direct Debit (as in you can complete an indemnity claim if a DD goes from your bank & is incorrect). It's odd though that Barclaycard weren't able to shed any light on it, I would expect them to have at least a payment queries or disputes team who would be able to investigate for you.

I'm sure you would have noticed but are there any additional payments to your account over the last few months that you didn't make?

Is it a negative or positive amount? And do you pay by Direct Debit?

Most indemnity claims are the transactions between Banks where a refund has been claimed under the DD Guarantee. But that would usually reflect as a credit on the Current account used to pay the CC.

  • Thanks for the replies but I am becoming increasingly worried about this and I still don't understand it. The amount shows up as a debit on my Barclaycard with the words indemnity claim where the merchant name would be.

I have had several conversations with my bank and Barclaycard and this is what they say.

Barclaycard say it is an amount of money requested by my bank. They will not specify the account or sort code and say they don't know which account the money has gone to, although I do not believe for one moment that they can't find this out. They say it is not a merchant transaction so they will not investigate it as a fraud. In fact they say it is a pre authorised transaction from my bank and therefore they have no reason to investigate it at all despite the fact that I have told them no such authorisation exists. They have refused to even acknowledge that I have a complaint at all.

My bank know nothing about this and say they have not requested any such amount.

I seem to be stuck in a place where I can go no further.

    What do I do?

I am writing a letter of complaint to Barclaycard.

    About all you can do.

But - do you pay by DD and have you paid any statements circa £533 in total?

Or do you have any DD payments to your Barclaycard account that were not made by you? It is possible for a DD to be claimed on an incorrect bank account & sometimes for an account holder not to realise for a number of months. A bank will then do the Indemnity claim and if it more than one payment, they may bulk the amounts together & make one claim.
