Courier lost my Passport

Hi guys, apologies if this is the wrong place for this post, but I wasn't sure where it belonged!
I'm after some advice. I renewed my passport through the Post Office 'Check & Send' service just before Christmas, and today thought it was about time I tried to track it to see what stage of the application it was at. Using the tracking number supplied with my application I decided to go online and was e-mailed back to say that it had been delivered. I thought this was slightly concerning as I hadn't received it, so I phoned and spoke to someone at the courier company (DX Secure) who confirmed that it had been posted through the letter box, and that the delivery driver had taken a picture of the house to confirm the correct address. The trouble is, that there is two properties on my street that are 'No. 1', one at either end, and they are technically different streets. I'm guessing that my passport has ended up at the wrong one. However, having just walked down there it seems that the property is unoccupied. DX are forwarding the delivery information on to me tomorrow to confirm my suspiscions.
I have two issues with the courier company however.
1. If the passport was delivered to this unoccupied address, how on earth do I get it back?
2. The entire idea of the courier service was that it had to be signed for on receipt instead of just shoved through a letter box.
Has anyone had any experience of dodgy courier deliveries in the past or know where I stand with regards to getting a resolution? I'm worried that such an important document is just lying around on someone elses doormat, and I'm waiting for it to book my holiday before the sales finish!
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Are there any agencts boards up or anything? Bit of a long shot, but if so contact them as they will have keys.0

Thanks arcon, no boards up but i'm busy googling the address to see if it's listed anywhere for sale / let.0

Throw it back to the Passport Service, they can sort the mess out.
How can there be two number 1's? Different postcodes?0 -
How could it happen? ... Easy:there is two properties on my street that are 'No. 1', one at either end, and they are technically different streets.
If you can clearly show it was not delivered to your door then bat it back to the Passport Agency to sort out, unless there may be a more simple solution as mentioned above.0 -
Just waiting on a call back from the passport office, so hopefully I'll get some joy there.
Unfortunately, I think it's the same postcode, but the first No. 1 is 1 Paradise Court which is in the courtyard that leads onto the Mews where I live, which is Paradise Mews......it could be confusing if you don't read the sign in the courtyard!!
The annoying thing is, the good old Royal Mail postie knows the area and my old cut up passport arrived back just fine! It's frustrating that the passport office would use a courier service that doesn't know the local area and (as I've just found out on the website) doesn't require a signature.0 -

We have the same issue here. I live at 2 XX Court but there is also a 2 XX Gate. (The estate is called XX Gate). We often get each other's mail - even though the street signs are immediately outside our respective houses!0
