I have added a vital part to your post.

We appear to have gone way past thankfulness that we live in a country that will support us if we are unable to support ourselves and gone onto greed that appears to suggest the taxpayer somehow 'owes' us. Why not allow all workers to spend their salaries on nice things and somehow have someone else pay the mortgage, rent etc. After all why should we have to spend our own money on boring, mundane things?

For goodness sake the OP will probably still receive £1K a month tax free in various benefits and will just have to pay his own rent and council tax. In social housing this is probably no more than £600 a month. The 50K invested wisely will pay the rent for a long long time.
