Refund by cheque

Options
Last week I phoned up to book an appointment with Dental Hygienist, a sI have done for a number of years. A colleague who heard, made a comment afterwards, and to cut a long story short, it turns out I've been paying to see a hygienist on private, when I thought it was part of NHS, but the way the practice had phrased, I thought I had to do that. Anyway - stupid me... moving on.

When I called back to discuss, I ended up cancelling my hygienist appt and booking in with the dentist instead. On my first call I'd paid a £20 deposit for the hygienist, and the lady now said to me, that I could use that to pay the £17 dentist charge, and could leave the extra £3 on my account or get it back when I attended the appointment.

So, went to the dentist today, after the appointment the lady at the desk told me I owed £17. I explained I'd already paid. She told me that the money couldn't be transferred as it had already been allocated to the hygienist. She told me I could only get a refund via Cheque as the manager had to approve it, even though I'd paid by debit card. Is this right? Surely they should refund it onto my card?

The only good thing is, I got them to agree that I wouldn't pay the £17 until my cheque had arrived.
