I now wear monthly contacts ( great for me) and my prescription is -9.75 and -10 but I'm afraid I can't drive at night as my night vision is very poor due to the shortsightedned - winter months for me are a bind as I am on a 3.30pm curfew to get home safely !!
no-one has ever told me I am partially sighted though

but without my lenses - blind as the proverbial bat!

I'm -20 & -21 & before I had retinal bleeds leading to scarring & loss of vision I drove as my sight could be corrected easily with contact lenses (or very expensive glasses).

The lack of night vision vision is probably related to your short sightedness as your retina is stretched over a larger eyeball & the light sensitive layers are thinner than normal. My optician wasn't too impressed with the yellow night vision glasses & I didn't notice much difference except for a tiny reduction in glare from oncoming headlightd. At the time (10 years + ago) my insurers weren't sure if wearing them would invalidate my insurance either, so you may want to check this.

I'm rubbish in the dark - almost sat on a bloke in the cinema as I was a bit late & lights had gone down :rotfl:

HappySaver1968 - being registered as partially sighted/blind only kicks in when your vision can't be corrected to a certain standard, nothing to do with how your eyesight deteriorates over time. But if you aren't sure of what your optician meant then go back & check - sure they won't mind as they are there to provide a service to you.
And I find that looking back at you gives a better view, a better view...

thanks Gardenia - I thought the problem with the dark was more to do with my shortsightedness as my cousin who is the only other person in the family to have shortsight is the same

I know waht you mean about the dark in cinemas etc- people take the mickey out of me for clinging on to my hubby or friend when in car parks etc- but it's not really funny when you literally can't see a thing!
also- no night driving gets me out of being the designated driver, so it's not ALL bad news :j

Interesting thread. My vision is -10.25 in both eyes, plus astigmatism. I have long noticed that my eyesight isn't good as night but I never knew why. I don't cycle in winter as I can't see too well in the dark - streetlights and car headlamps are very dazzling but I assumed it was reflection from my lenses.
