Should be fine for a petrol with reasonable mileage, late 2007 early 2008

You might be pushed 6k for 2008 civic unless it has high mileage

Aye, he knows there'll need to be a bit of flexibiltiy on the price/age, but looking on the Auto Trader, there are some 2006 models with 40k miles on for just under/over £6k.

He has also considered the current(ish) Focus, which there are loads of in the price range.

At this stage its just getting some ideas of what the best options are in the price range, and then if there are any local, he'll have to go and look at a few, and start narrowing it down.

I paid just under 8k for my car for Honda civic 1.8se last Sep it has low mileage though it was almost 1k less than cars I seen in my area, I had to go away to get it. Focus are good cars too. I traded mine in didnt get much for it, it was 10 year old but was in mint condition and maintained

I did get car from a dealer though it bumps price up a bit

Ex owner here (2006 2.2 diesel). Clutch failed at 40k miles (very weak, known issue), paint made of butter (water based eco rubbish apparently). The suspension, as mentioned, is crashy and unconfortable. If you must buy it at least make sure it has 16" wheels, not 17".

Reliability during the 9 months I had it was not good, as apart from the clutch (a whopping £600 to replace, luckily the dealer paid after a lot of arguing) I also had a 2nd water temp sensor failure (common again) and stuck front passanger door lock. This last one was icing on cake and I had to sell it. Not impressed.

Now I have been owning a MK2 Focus 1.6 Zetec petrol for the last 1.5 years and I love it. Proper car, comfy, cheap to run and not a single fault so far.

The rule of thumb is... if the grouping roughly doubles then the premium should stay the same, if it's higher it will be more and lower be less etc.

So in theory the Civic should of jumped to an 18 on a scale of 1-50 (and 9 on a scale of 1-20).. so it is being classified slightly higher than before.

    Cheers for that.

What sort of economy do you get from the 1.6 focus, and what year is it?

Dad is considering those too (probably a 1.6 petrol 2007 or 08 model), but some reviews are iffy on the fuel economy, and he doesn't want something that's gonna cost him a lot to run (fuel and road tax).

Economy is around 38-40 MPG, mixed driving. With the Honda (remember, it was the 2.2 diesel; I have no idea about the 1.8 petrol) I was getting around 45MPG. Tax is a bit more than the Honda as well (£165 vs £125 per annum if I remember correctly). However, all parts are cheaper on the Ford: service (£100 vs £150 for a minor one), tyres (£60 vs £100 as I had expensive 17" ones on the Honda) but what really sets the Focus apart from me is the comfort, as it soaks the bumps so much better than the Civic.

Also remember that the Honda will be approx. 30% more expensive like for like but should keep its value slightly better.

However, don't take my word for it, test drive both if you can. Maybe the extra toys on the Civic, the great interior layout and "magic seats" will make all the difference for you...

Not exactly sure how this works, but if the scale has moved from 20 to 50 that suggests that all old ratings should be multiplied by 2.5
The 9 rated Civic should then go to 22.5, so if its new rating is 21, surely it is being rated slightly lower than before?
