Puzzled over car insurance with LV

We recently bought another car and plan to sell existing one shortly. I spoke to LV who insure current car and they said I could add new car to same policy. All T's and C's to remain unchanged. Cost a bit more as it is a more powerful car but we have all NCDs in place.

Policy arrived for new car today and where the current car shows me as driver, or any driver with my permission (I have a large extended family) and has been like that forever, the new policy for the new car restricted drivers to me and my son (named). My son has not been on my policy for years, I think maybe once a long time ago when he was under 21 and we went on holiday but certainly not in the last 5 years. This change of course also prevents my husband from driving it.

I rang up to ask what was going on and first of all they said there were not two insurance policies only one with both cars. Then they admitted there were two policies but said they were identical. Then they agreed that "Any named driver with permission" clause had been removed on new car policy and my son's name subsituted. They had no explanation for this. My son's name was never mentioned when I rang up to add second car and I have just looked back over the last four years policies and he is not shown on these either.

They then said they could change policy for new car to be "Any named driver" as it says on current policy but that this would be an additional £100 cost per annum. When I asked why - again they could give no explanation beyond that is the extra cost. So they changed it from what it was, without telling me, and now charge me extra to change it back....

Anyone familiar with car insurance like to hazard a guess as to what is going on here?

They have been getting shut of any driver policies for many years. Surprised you lasted this long with one.

Even the firms insurance had clauses that excluded certain ages or people with points. They needed to be added
as named not just any employee.

Add the names of any potential driver and your sorted, Other drivers maybe covered to drive your car in their insurance
but again clauses are being added for this these days.

Also they will only be covered 3rd party so if they damage your car, Either you pay to get it fixed or you ask them for the
money. Insurance wont payout for your car.

There's a difference between Any Driver which is basically anyone can drive generally with some conditions and Any Named Driver which is for anyone specifically named to drive

An "Any Driver" policy is a bit like an open cheque book. I'm surprised it's still being offered for an extra £100.

There's nothing to stop you letting a friend with 9 points, a string of accidents and a drink driving conviction drive your car, and the insurer is still liable. Limiting it to specific named drivers with a declared history cuts the risk (and hence the premium) considerably.
