If you're not using the van, do it now.
Send the tax disk back, and re tax it from next month.
The downside is you can't apply for a refund, but as it's historic you won't be losing anything.
Check the status on the dvla website, to make sure the Swansea don't cancel the new disk by accident.
If they do, get another one from the post office.

Why not SORN it the day you leave and tax it when you get back? A vehicle can be SORNed and taxed.

It can be sorned or taxed, not both.

Unfortunately I am using it now - I keep it on a public road regardless, and like to take it on a little run every week just to keep it in shape.

I could do the SORN and then tax thing to change the date... I'm leaving on the 25th February so hopefully there's still time..?

There's nothing to stop you buying the new one tomorrow from the 1st of Jan, and sending the old one back on the same day.

The only thing could be dvla get confused and cancel all the tax, but then you could buy another one before you go, backdated to the first of Feb, even Jan again if they're fast.

Thinking about it, if you just get another from the post office, it's nil value, so that in itself will reset the dvla computer to next jan, even if you don't send the first one back.
  • You really need to ask them how they manage this situation; how to re tax a camper that is at the time, in Europe.

And if you find out - let me know as I will be doing the same in mine in the future...
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

I think the best thing would be to take your V5 with you, then tax it online whilst you are away. This will then show up on the Police computer that you are all legal when it comes to your tax, so there will no reason to check your disc on the drive home from the ferry to your house when you get home.

However better still would be to divert your post to someone you trust like a family member or friend and get them to forward it on to you whilst you are away. Although that would require a few days advance planning to work out where you will be when the disc arrives.

Tax it up to two months before or tax it by letter and the dvla will post it abroad to you.
But only worth doing it you actually need to pay for it.

So you just need to find somewhere you can park it for a few days while you sort this out?

You can tax the vehicle 2 months before it expires if that helps.

You can tax the vehicle 365 days a year if you want. However it will be a disc from the beginning of the month you do though.
