  • I keep them for 3 months, even if the buyer says they have received the item and leaves feedback. Reason being... I sent a CD international signed for. This guy had given me no end of problems but that's a different rant... He told me it had arrived so I threw everything away. A week later (after the trash collection), he started an item not received dispute through Paypal. I no longer had proof so he got 40 quid out of me...

Ok, lets extend it a bit, how many items do you list? I only list occasionally, how about those powersellers that are selling 100+ items at any one time?

I keep mine for a year, just to be safe. I have a huge boxfile worth of COPs and other slips and every few weeks just throw away the ones from the bottom of the pile that are over a year old.

Definitely keep them for a minimum of 6 months though so you can argue if a chargeback for misuse of card is tried on you by paypal, in some cases having everything to hand has made a buyer back down if he realises you can track something to his home.

I am currently a powerseller although expect to lose that status soon as ebay say I'm not making enough... I got powerseller status by selling a huge chunk of my record collection and was listing 50 new items a week. Now I just list 20 new items a week.

Not for a fraudulent use of card claim, that can easily be done up to 6 months. I admit that an RD slip is no guarantee that you can stop the claim and definitely not if the original purchase really was a scam, but there have been stories both here and on other forums where contacting the buyer who is claiming fraudulent use and mentioning that you will seek legal redress as you can track the parcel to his home...does do wonders for their memory and often the claim is withdrawn.

I keep all my postal receipts for at least five years. Why? They're tax deductible expenses. Also if an item is paid for via credit card then you can still get a charge back years later.
