Just go to your local building society and open a savings account !!!!!!!

My thoughts exactly, or open an online account with somewhere like the Skipton BS:

Skipton even give you a freepost address to send cheques into.

The bank pays you and they look after your money.

The other answer is don't have a bank account and don't accept cheques. Forgo the money that you would get from people who insist on paying you that way. On your world view that would be preferable to dealing with a bank and probably lose you less.
