Any Grants etc for new kitchen?

Hi there, I was just wondering if anyone knows of any grants or anything like that for putting in a new kitchen. My partner is on Job Seekers and owns a house that he lets out usually. The last tenant left the place in a mess and without paying last months rent and he now needs to replace the kitchen before he can let it out again - he can't afford to pay for it himself and the mortgage company are on his back for payments which he can't afford - thats why he let it in the first place - hes in a catch 22 situation really needs to fix kitchen to get it let and needs to get it let to get some money to pay mortgage - bit of a nightmare situation :(

Unfortunately he didn't have insurance which i told him a million times to sort....

any advice most welcome :)

    A Loan ?......
  • No, not that I can think of. Not if he isn't in a group which could be interpreted as vulnerable. I think it may be time to move back in and do what he can with whatever he's got..

The only brain-wave I can think of is that he scours FreeCycle or Freegle, especially in well-heeled areas where people are putting new ones in.

    Why doesn't he sell it?

He will have to get a loan, no grants available

Maybe see if there any ex display kitchens around but it will still cost him money. He should have put money aside for this or like you said insurance still it easy to say once the horse has bolted.

The OP is in Northern Ireland so there's chance that the property is there too,. If he hasn't owned for quite a while there may be little/no equity, so selling may be difficult/disastrous

The local authority might be able to help.

But if he's struggling with this then will he struggle if he got a tenant and further work was required.

Sometimes you have to admit that a 'business' isn't and get rid.

No one will give a loan to someone on JSA, so unless he has a friend or family member who is willing to splash the cash, this doesn't look likely.

Sorry OP but I think the idea of the government giving grants to homeowners for new kitchens is clutching at sraws somewhat!

IS the kitchen REALLY that bad? Do you know anyone who is good at DIY that can give it a bit of a spruce up until the funds are avaliabel to get a new kitchen?

Also, in the long run, if the person in question is on JSA and struggling financially, perhaps it would make sense to sell the property, as it seems they can't afford to maintain the property while it is beign rented out (just a suggestion). What would happen if a tenant was in and the boiler needed replaced?

Worth looking on ebay for kitchens that people are replacing?

..especially when the property in question is not the claimant's actual residence but a property which he rents out , effectively a business for which he failed to prepare adequately.

Other posters have already suggested freecycle, ex-display, ebay etc.

If the budget is really that tight the OP's partner should make a full assessment about the costs/reality of trying to retain the property.

I bought a kitchen for £40 off ebay, although I did have to remove it from the house first and hire a van. Worked out about £100 + my time. Bargain really !!
