Fair or not, you damaged his car and you are being offered a way of making amends without claiming on your insurance. Dont forget to inform your insurers about the incident.

With respect, that is not what I was asking. I was seeking advice not judgement.

    When did this happen?

I'd honestly go through the insurance, he's already increasing the price and when he puts in a whiplash claim in a few months and sues you for £3k+ you'll regret it.

Im not judging you i was only pointing out that if you want to settle it without using your insurance then you will have to play by his rules. You could always go through the insurance, thats what its there for but, you may find your premiums will increase next year.
If it was me i would pay the £250.

    Here goes:

I got involved in car park prang. Third party vehicle was a parked Merc that sustained minor scuffing and scratching to the bumper in a glancing collision/impact. The scratching is not deep and most of it is just scuffing.

I have a picture of the TP vehicle's damage.

After the TP states that he is a mechanic and that damage will cost between £100 to 150 to repair at his friend's garage. I agree to pay between those figures to fix it. He then comes back saying that the cost will now be £250 because a greater area needs to be sprayed to match it.

    Does this sound right?

    (a) It seems steep to me and
    (b) It seems unfair that he can just up the cost on me.

Could well be right to be honest depending how much they need to blend it.

Third party vehicle was a Merc £250 is cheap even to cover up some scuffs, it cost me that over 8 years ago for a Yaris, pay the man and move on also get a receipt from him for the money you hand over,

£250 is reasonable for a decent panel repaint paint job.

Spraying a chip the size of a pea cost me £70 recently.

Insurance job would easily be into 4 figures.

£250 sounds about right for a full bumper respray, it needs to be sanded, possibly filled if deep scratches, primed, sprayed and then blended in with the rest of the bumper or it'll look like it's been resprayed. It also depends on the colour as that'll affect the price of the paint.
He hasn't 'upped the cost', he gave you an estimated price and then gave you the price when he found out himself, although you'd expect him to get mates rates.

I don't think it's a fair price at all - normally you'll pay between £150-200 a panel, for a full respray including prep work (unless it's horrific and needs alot of filling) so the blending nonsense is just that. I wouldn't accept a part spray on a bumper especially if the car is silver /red / yellow (lol) as the match would look horrid. He will be getting it done for somewhere in the region of £100 or less as it'll be a homer.

In saying that I completely agree with the above in that, £250 is far cheaper than your insurance would work out to be - so I would just pay it.

Make sure you get it written down and signed that you paid him, what it was for, date, registrations etc. Make sure you detail as much as you can so you have something in writing to go back on should he ever come back.

As already said £250 is probably about right, even if he is getting it done slightly cheaper as mates rates he is going to charge you retail price, right or wrong.

You are meant to inform your insurer (and of course that is the proper advice) but if you do expect them to hold your NCB for this year as they have to keep any possible claim they are informed about open for one year just in case the third party does decide to claim. I learnt that one the hard way after a slight knock, third party wanted to go through the insurance then decided it wasn't worth it (it was only a cracked number plate) yet my insurer held my 4th year NCB so I went 2 years on 3 years NCB then upto 5 years lol.

    Best of luck
