Best way to cancel Whatever Happens policy?

Options
Hopefully this is the appropriate forum for my query. I made a recent purchase from Currys/PC World and received the obligatory hard sell for their “Whatever Happens” support agreement. I didn’t want this, however the sales person offered a discount equivalent to the first two months cover. They also said that if I wanted I could go away and cancel the Direct Debit and so be up on the deal – everyone’s a winner! My receipt shows that the premium for the first month has been charged, so the Direct Debit will presumably start a month after the purchase date.

Looking at the Whatever Happens terms I have two questions:

It states that cancellation needs to take place by calling KNOWHOW Customer Services – is it better to do this than simply cancelling the Direct Debit?

Even more interesting is that it states you get a full refund if you cancel the policy within 14 days, which I’m happy to do. Does this mean that they will have to refund the cost of the first month of cover and that I would effectively get the full discount back? Or is there some way they can refuse this after the sale due to the discount being conditional on taking out a Whatever Happens policy?

My assumption would be that the people administering the Whatever Happens policy are completely separate from the people selling things in the shop and that the “Manager Discretion” discount on the price can’t be retrospectively changed, but I would appreciate a second opinion before I pick up the phone please.

  • You need to call up customer services to cancel the contract within the 14 days cooling off period. Otherwise you might be in breach of contract if you simply cancel the DD - and you might be chased for the money owed.
