panasonic DECT answerphone battery problem

I have a Panasonic digital standalone answerphone
model no KX-TCD340E which has worked seamlessly until now. The battery warning light is flashing. I have put in some new batteries and the warning light continues to flsh.
I have cleaned the shiny metal bits in case they were dirty but the problem remains.
Any ideas as to what I could do to solve this problem?
Thanks very much.

What type of batteries have you fitted?

Are they fitted correctly? i.e. orientation.

If you have fitted the correct rechargeable batteries for the phone, they will take several hours to charge up before the warning light goes out.
