Ipod Nano 1st gen recalled & swapped for 6th Gen - not happy!!

Options
I was just wondering if someone could help with a small problem I am having with my replacement ipod nano. I had a beautiful black Nano 1st Gen that was working perfectly, and had speakers and a stereo system that it fitted into, and charged.
I have now been sent a replacement 6th generation ipod which is too small, and does not charge in my speaker systems. This now means that my speaker set and stereo are only able to do half the job (playing the music, and not charging) they were designed to do.
I have read elswhere that the 6th gen ipod nano used slightly different technology which means that all pre-existing docking station speaker sets no longer charge the unit, and therefore they are only able play music.
As a consumer, do I have any rights to return the product and ask for a 1st gen back, or do I have to accept what has been sent as it was done as a product recall.
A 6th gen ipod is not something I personally would have chosen, and although I appreciate Apple organising a replacement programme, I feel we should have been given a choice as to what we received back.

    What have Apple said?

You could ask for another 1st Gen, or possibly even your own back, but as they have been deemed 'faulty' I don't know how successful this would be.

How did you find out about the replacement scheme? Around where I am, the shops all had signs stating you would swap your 1st for a 6th Gen (this is a great deal for most people!) and the email I had definitely stated the same.

In essence they have replaced your faulty product with a much newer, better model which will last you much longer, so I'd consider buying a new docking station. If you ask in Apple, they might offer you a reduction on Apple products, but you can get Ipod docking stations much cheaper elsewhere so this might not benefit you too much.

With regards to a choice - the 1st gens were faulty. They recalled all of them, because their quality was substandard, and they were breaking. So in there eyes, you had a choice - stick with the one you have, but know that it is likely to break because it is faulty, or upgrade to a 6th gen, which was well-advertised, even on here.

sell the 6th gen and buy a 1st gen, quite a few on eBay. Your risk if it bursts into flames though.

Personally I'm over the moon that my old, knackered 1st gen is being replaced with a shiny new 6th gen.

The odds of Apple having a new first generation iPod Nano (6 *years* old, which is a lifetime in technology) lying around to send to you is pretty slim.

If you sell the new iPod on eBay, you can buy a second hand first generation (leaving you exactly where you where before) and end up with lots of £ in your pocket.
Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.

No chance! They were selling like hot cakes. The ones for sale now will not be the ones that can be exchanged.

OP, would you have preferred a refund?

Actually, you could probably sell the 6th Gen and buy a decent 2nd Gen and still have a nice chunk of change in your pocket :)

Good point. OP I'll swap you my 2nd gen nano for your 6th gen if you want.

Not all 1st generation nano's were recalled, only ones sold over a specific time period with specific serial numbers.

You can still pick up cheap 1st generation nanos if you want one. As others have said sell your 6th gen and just buy another 1st gen.
  • If you write to Apple in Cork (there was no email way of complaining, think they like the effort put into letters... ) they are pretty quick at responding and quite helpful. I send a letter on a Friday and was called on the Tuesday and the same guy stuck with my issue through out the resolve.. might be worth a shot if you not happy.
