Do I need receipt for cash refund of faulty clothing?

Hi all! Bought my dd a coat from debenhams about 10 days ago (paid dull price and is still full price in store)
The coat still has tags on etc she's gone to wear it for the 1 st time today and the stitching is coming away (it's one of those padded jackets with the diamond shaped sewing?)
Anyway can't find the receipt - poss thrown it away as she was v happy with the jacket initially. Can I return for cash refund?

Probably not, the shop is entitled to see a proof of purchase otherwise their argument would be "what is to show that you didn't steal it" or how you didn't just pick it up off the rack and walk over to the till with it.
Nor would you have proof of how old it was.
You may have more luck with getting a replacement.Thinking critically since 1996....0 -
You can ask, but it's unlikely with no proof. Also, if it's been reduced in the sales, you'll probably only get the reduced value back unless you have some other proof of how much you paid (like a bank statement showing the transaction)0

DD loves the coat
It is still the same price in the shop
Why ask for a refund, not just see if they can do an exchange? DD still has the coat she loves, nobody suffers financially, burden of proof much lower.0 -
Hi all thanks for the info! Wish we could exchange it but it's a "limited" range and every store I have rang (6) don't have it in stock and won't be getting it back in until feb time (an eternity for a teenager lol) it's deffo not in sale and never has been so rrp is still the same. Do have proof via online statement but I spent £250 in that transaction - would they accept that as proof?0

Well that is good news, it's much better than nothing. Go in, be polite and see what they say.
You might have to try a store or two until you get a nice CSA that refunds for you.
You could start with the angle: my daughter loves this and wants to get a replacement due to it being faulty...can you try and find one....
and when they don't ask them what they will do about it for you.Thinking critically since 1996....0 -
Does it have to be a cash refund? Suggest a credit note or voucher and they may be more amenable to taking it back without any proof of purchase but do take in your bank statement regardless.0

If you paid by card you can't have a cash refund, receipt or no receipt.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -

Yes a bank statement is proof of purchase under the SoGA. You may run into problems since the total amount wont be the same amount as the coat but they technically can look it up on their systems as they will have their own copy of the receipt. Might help them narrow it down (depending on if they search by date/time or product) if she can tell them not only the date but the time it was bought at.
Remember and be polite - as the saying goes, you catch more flies with honey than vinegar!
As other posters have said though, they may only refund onto the card that was used to purchase it. Unless you offer to take a credit note or exchange (if available). You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0
